Selfless Shania becomes ambassador to Help the Homeless
Year 8 star Shania is having quite a week! First her fantastic painting earned a donation of £10,000 at the Art for Ark auction and now she has turned her hand to helping her community.
Although she was not the winner of the recent First Give competition to give funds to a local charity, Shania still wanted to help her chosen charity, The Passage, which assists homeless people in finding accommodation and jobs.
She said: I wanted to help in my own time but I was not sure how. I have been on the phone to several Passage members and talked to them about the schemes and mentoring sessions they run. These sessions are really good because they motivate the homeless people and they are really passionate about it.
The Passage was so impressed by Shania's determination to help them - charity organiser Miranda Keast called her 'an inspirational young woman' - that they have made her their first ever ambassador.
Ark Academy hosted a meeting for Shania and her mum, two representatives from First Give, Louisa and Laura, along with The Passage's Miranda, to further discuss how Shania and Ark can assist in raising funds for the charity.
Several ideas were floated, including collections of clothes, school competitions where people compete for prizes and a cinema event where we would sell popcorn and charge admission.
The clear favourite was bringing Shania's adorable dog, Casper, in to take photos with students for a £1 fee - now that's fur-nomenal fundraising!
Shania then held an assembly to drum up support for this very worthy cause and set up her own committee to help with organising all the events. We will keep you posted on the upcoming developments and let you know how to donate.
Well done Shania, you are a true example of Civitas in Action!
