Teaching and learning
Ark Academy is an all-through school which takes pupils from nursery at age three through to Sixth Form.
The school opened in 2008 and currently has a part-time Nursery with 30 morning spaces and 30 afternoon spaces, two Reception classes, two Year One classes, two Year Two classes, two Year Three classes, two Year Four classes, two Year Five classes and two Year Six classes. Each year, we will admit two new Reception classes (30 pupils each).
We want to create a nurturing environment where every pupil feels part of a community even as the school reaches its capacity. Our innovative structure creates “small schools” within the academy to replicate the feel of a smaller school within the larger academy community. This and the fact that the academy is an “all-through” school helps overcome the issues often associated with a child’s transition from primary to secondary school. The academy will be structured as follows:
- A primary school and nursery
- A separate 180-pupil Year 7 school to ease the transition from primary to secondary school
- Faculty-based units for Years 8 – 11
- A Sixth Form
The academy’s first 180 secondary pupils started in September 2010.
