Ark Academy follows the National Curriculum guidance for art and design. We believe that art and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity and as such seek to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and design. Our curriculum has been designed to incorporate the teaching of key art skills (colour, shape, form, pattern, texture) which have been mapped across Key Stage 1 and 2 to ensure these skills are revisited and built upon. Through ‘design technology’ lessons, pupils also further develop their skills in planning, designing, crafting and making a final ‘product’. Included in our curriculum are real examples of artistic movements and techniques and deliberate links to known artists to give pupils the chance to create in the style of such movements and artists. Our art curriculum strongly links with our humanities curriculum to ensure pupils are able to place art and design contextually within our shared human history and culture – both in Britain and worldwide.
