Ark Academy’s first ever Literary Festival!
Wednesday 08 March 2017
Spring Term 2 has seen an explosion of literary love in the form of our first ever LitFest!
We ran skype author interviews with dystopian novelist Kerry Drewery and Josh Lacey. Kerry spoke about the honour of being nominated for the prestigious Carneige award. Josh emphasised how reading widely ignited his passion for words. Khadija Abderrahmane said “I loved it, especially asking my question”.
A highlight was the Celebrity Death Match! 13 book characters battled it out in a tense competition, where victory was only possible by using the power of words. Contestants were relentlessly questioned by the judges for the kudos of being crowned the ultimate book character.
Ongoing throughout the week was the ‘Secret Agent Scavenger Hunt’, which saw teams of student sleuths attempting to decode picture clues and answer riddles put to them by detectives Nancy Drew, Inspector Goole, and Sherlock Holmes himself.
The literary rivalry continued in tutor time, with twelve Key Stage 3 forms participating in The Big Ark Book quiz. Students pooled their knowledge on magical worlds, Victorian novels, and more in a bid for house points. The overall winners were 9 Zephaniah, with 9 Heaney in second place, 7 Rylance and 8 Gandhi sharing joint-third position.
We celebrated World Book Day with a Poetry Slam, compered once more by the incredible Milola Adelekan (Year 12). Participation was mixed between slam regulars and those performing for the very first time. After a nail-biting period of deliberation, the deserving winners were revealed as follows –1st Richarn Holder; 2nd Omari Williams; 3rd Katrin Ivanova; 4th Elidona Bokrugji, with a special effort prize going to Muna Ali – congratulations!
Three classes were treated to creative writing workshops from author Faye Bird. Especially popular was Faye’s reading of a teaser passage from her first book, ‘My Second Life’ which has been flying off the shelves ever since.
Victor Ebubedike’s (Year 10) words sum up what we hoped to achieve – “I hadn’t read for a long time and last week got me thinking about getting back into it, so I got a book from the library. The feeling of picking a book up and not wanting to put it down is the best”.
