Welcome to Applied Science

Why do we learn applied science?

BTEC Applied Science embodies a fundamentally learner-centered approach to the curriculum, with a flexible, unit-based structure and knowledge applied in project-based assessments. It focuses on the holistic development of the practical, interpersonal and thinking skills required to be able to succeed in employment and higher education. Employers are looking for recruits with a thorough grounding in the latest industry requirements and work-ready skills such as teamwork, and the qualification also supports students enter Higher Education. The BTEC level 3 national extended diploma in Applied Science is a two-year course. It is equivalent in size to three A Levels, with a total of 13 units spread over two years, of which 7 are mandatory and 6 optional, chosen by us. 4 units are externally sat exams, and 9 are internally moderated.

Our approach

As each unit builds in rigour, learners develop transferable and higher order skills which are valued by higher education providers and employers. Through the study of applied science, development of skills such as evaluation, analysis and synthesis are embedded throughout the two years. From the outset of the course, students complete practical's frequently to develop scientific techniques, precision and accuracy is achieved well. As students gain confidence, their practical skills become more self-sufficient and analytical. Key skills developed from the beginning to the end of the course are:

  • Attention to detail (Carrying out analytical techniques)
  • Research skills (independent assignments and projects)
  • Problem-solving skills (through evaluative report writing)
