On Tuesday afternoon Ark Academy’s Dance Studio was transformed into the bustling streets of Verona as a touring production of Romeo and Juliet sprung to life. Students from the prestigious LAMDA Drama school treated a select group of Year 9 students to an innovative and exciting adaptation of the Shakespeare classic set in ‘Hotel Capulet’ and ‘Hotel Montague’.
Students were immediately taken aback by the staging of the play in the round with actors interacting with the audience immersing them into the well-known story. The production utilised multi-rolling with three different sets of ‘star-crossed lovers’ throughout as well as modern music. The actor playing Mercutio was particularly engaging frequently making the audience chuckle with his playful and exuberant portrayal of Romeo’s best friend. The whole ensemble worked tirelessly throughout the play injecting energy during chaotic choregraphed transitions that left students wondering who to watch.
After the play the students were fortunate enough to have a short Q&A session with the cast and creatives and were able to show off their knowledge of the text and probe the actors about the rehearsal process.
For most students it was their first experience of live theatre and one I am sure they will never forget!
