Why do we learn Art and Design?

Creativity is critical thinking. Art and Design opens passages and possibilities to think beyond what we already know. Without these subjects we would not have innovation. The outliers in other fields such as Mathematics or Science are the most creative people. Art and Design defines the identity of a nation and is deeply inbedded in humanity. The study of Art and Design allows students to find out who they are, and they are all different.

Primary

We believe that the subjects of art and design technology embody some of the highest forms of human creativity and as such, we seek to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and design. We have deliberately planned our art and design technology units to ensure that key foci for each subject are spread over the year, ensuring there are opportunities for children to explore a range of media, materials, tools and concepts over the course of their journey in the primary phase. Additionally, our art curriculum has been designed to incorporate the teaching of key art skills (line, colour, shape, form, pattern, texture) which have been mapped across Key Stage 1 and 2 to ensure these skills are revisited.

Students create personal investigations and responses to a given theme, through the exploration of their own ideas informed by the exploration of artists of their chosing through relevent media investigations. During the course, students not only enhance their practical skills but also acquire knowledge in developing, perfecting, and documenting your concepts. Students learn to articulate their personal responses to align with objectives, and elevate their creativity by mastering the art of utilizing various media, materials, tools, technologies, and methods.
