Why do we learn modern foreign languages?

In MFL, we aim to give students the skills and confidence to communicate in a new language, whilst helping them to appreciate that the world around them is different and diverse.

Our approach

At KS3, students will develop the skills to communicate about themselves and eventually others close to them. Students should begin to understand how to develop their reading skills and begin to infer meaning and to work out new words from context.

During Y10 and Y11, through building upon the language at KS3, and expanding upon it in a more sophisticated way, we aim for students to be confident in communicating about others close to them and eventually a wider context (global issues), whilst balancing and contrasting various points of view.

Students at KS5 will learn to communicate complex and well-researched ideas on cultural and societal topics. This includes undertaking an independent research project on a pertinent topic, whereby students develop their literacy skills by researching target language press articles. They will improve their spoken skills so as to spontaneously and authentically interact with a degree of ease, and boost their grammatical knowledge of more challenging concepts. Students will gain an appreciation of the power of expression of the language, and manipulate this in more demanding translation tasks.
