Secondary
Year 7 – Creating a love for Physical Education – We spend the first three lessons ‘getting to know’ the pupils in Year 7. During this time we baseline them as a Department and make any necessary changes to classes. We then spend the academic year exposing the pupils to various sports [many of these are new to the pupils]. The reason for this is to help the pupils find a sport they enjoy and encourage them to take part in extracurricular clubs and if possible represent the school. The four lesson rotation allows time to develop skills in each sport but also ensure a swift transition onto a new sport. As a department we find that the pupils appreciate this as it caters for all [pupils do not spend too long on one activity].
Year 8 – Broadening Sporting Experiences – During Year 8 we build on the previous skills learnt by doing an additional 4 lessons in majority sports from Year 7. In particular, we focus on developing skills in netball, basketball and badminton as these are the sport’s most of our pupils go on to be assessed in at GCSE. However, we also introduce two new sports, to ensure they have new experiences: table tennis and Gaelic football.
Year 9 – Developing Skills and Embedding Knowledge – During Year 9 we would expect pupils to be familiar with the majority of skills and start to demonstrate these with more fluency in the sports that they have studied during KS3 e.g. netball. However, we also now put additional focus on the knowledge of the sport in Year 9. Lessons begin to have emphasis on rules, refereeing, and tactical awareness. In particular, we are introducing GCSE theory content into Year 9 practical lessons.
Yr10 & 11 [OCR GCSE PE]
The two-year course is designed around the OCR specification to ensure all topics are covered. Each topic is broken down to ensure it is covered in enough depth.
In relation to practical activities, we base these on the strengths of the cohort, which tend to be football, netball, badminton and athletics [this has been the trend in previous years but is continuously monitored and updated].
The specification allows our pupils to participate in a number of different physical activities via practical performance. Pupils also get the opportunity to use methods of practice to improve their level of performance in physical activity by analysing & evaluating their personal performance in a chosen sport. The course also requires them to underpin their practical performances with theoretical knowledge of the anatomical, physical and psychological demands and consider how these various factors affect performance. Overall, the pupils further their knowledge on the importance of a healthy, balanced and physically active lifestyle.
